On Monday afternoon, 80-year-old artist Henn Soopalu lost his life on Pärna Avenue in Valga when a younger driver reversed towards him without noticing what was happening.
The incident occurred in front of a five-storey yellow apartment building on a quiet street. Vello, a local resident who has lived there for half a century, witnessed from his kitchen window as an ambulance lifted the injured man onto a stretcher. The man wondered how it was possible to reverse from a dead-end street so quickly that it proved fatal.
According to Vello, the vehicle was first brought to a younger woman in his opposite flat, and then they attempted to leave the building. The driver did not look in the mirror and hit the man at high speed.
Soopalu's residence was a few streets away from the scene of the accident. His acquaintance Külli described how this small street has always been peaceful. "Dying here is the height of absurdity," she said.
Marks, a Latvian resident of the street who works in the neighbouring town of Valka, also said he could not understand how such a thing could happen on such a quiet street.
The young people who were in the car also received a shock. According to Vello, the woman later came home crying loudly and moved out shortly afterwards. Her friends helped her pack her belongings. "The entire group probably received a strong blow themselves as well," Vello supposed.
