Albanian man detained over 80 kilos of cocaine in Vigo released
The Provincial Court of Pontevedra has ordered the provisional release of an Albanian citizen after ruling that the evidence against him is insufficient. The suspect was arrested over drugs found in February at the port.

The Provincial Court of Pontevedra ordered on 8 September 2026 the provisional release of an Albanian citizen detained in his country of origin, according to lavozdegalicia.es. The sole evidence against him is a meeting he held in a Vigo bar days before 80 kilos of cocaine were seized at the port.
The drugs were found in February hidden in the refrigeration system of a container with frozen fish from South America. The man was arrested in Albania and transferred to Spain through an expedited extradition procedure, entering a prison in Madrid.
The investigated man argued that he was not residing in Vigo but rather in Portugal and that he travels to Spain solely for personal reasons, maintaining his financial support in Albania. He contended that the meeting with two suspects in a Vigo bar possessed "logical and documented alternatives" that explained it. One of those individuals is identified as one of the principal defendants in the case; the other could hold a managerial role in the organisation.
The Fifth Section of the Court concluded that there are no further leads against him beyond that meeting. The tribunal acknowledged that that lead could have justified the initial deprivation of liberty when it was necessary to expand the investigation. Having found no additional evidence, they decided to release him. Another of the individuals investigated in the case had already been freed previously. The case was investigated by the Instruction Court number 2 of Vigo.
