Driver flees police checkpoint in Las Palmas and is detained in Telde after pursuit
Local Police detained a driver who fled at the Paseo de San José. He had a suspended driving licence and the vehicle lacked insurance.
Flight at Paseo de San José ends with detention at Salinetas
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Local Police detained a driver on Friday, 11 September, who ignored a preventive vehicle checkpoint at Paseo de San José and fled, according to rtvc.es.
The checkpoint was properly signalled and was being carried out by officers from the Operational Intervention and Support Group-Special Unit (GOIA-UE), with participation of their canine handlers. When a white Toyota Corolla saloon approached the checkpoint around 17:30 hours, police officers signalled the driver to stop. The driver ignored them, executed a sharp manoeuvre and nearly struck several officers.
Pursuit on GC-1
Following the attempted collision, a pursuit began on the GC-1 motorway heading south. Officers from the City District Unit joined the operation. Despite the acoustic and luminous signals from police vehicles, the driver continued at high speed, carrying out reckless manoeuvres that put other road users at serious risk.
The fugitive took the Salinetas exit in the municipality of Telde and drove into a dirt wasteland. There he abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Officers caught up with him quickly and proceeded with his detention, although the suspect actively resisted. During the operation, one of the officers was injured.
Suspended licence and no insurance
Subsequent checks revealed that the detainee had a temporarily suspended driving licence by judicial order and that the vehicle lacked mandatory insurance in force. The car was immobilised and removed to the municipal depot.
The detainee was taken to National Police headquarters for the preparation of corresponding proceedings for the alleged commission of road safety crimes: reckless driving, driving with a judicially suspended licence and a serious disobedience offence.
