Carer arrested in the act of emptying employers' account

Spain's National Police have arrested a 26-year-old woman in Alicante accused of defrauding an elderly couple aged 82 and 89 of €40,810, for whom she worked as a carer, according to eleconomista.es reporting on a police statement.

The investigation was taken on by the Economic and Fiscal Crime Unit of the Alicante Provincial Police Station. The case was activated when one of the couple's children reported suspicious movements on his parents' bank account. In his statement, he specified that only he and his siblings were authorised on that account, and identified the woman caring for his parents for the past three years as the main suspect.

According to Spain's National Police, the fraud was carried out through 110 cash withdrawals made between November 2025 and August 2026, using the victims' bank card.

Three withdrawals on the same morning accelerate arrest

The person who filed the report himself discovered that on the same morning he had made the complaint, three cash withdrawals had been made at an ATM near his parents' home, coinciding with a brief absence of the carer from the house. Officers travelled immediately to the location.

At around noon, when the suspect left the residence, she was intercepted. Among her belongings she was carrying €400 in cash, an amount that matched one of the withdrawals made that morning. She was also carrying a receipt from a retail establishment in Marina Baja worth €534.89 paid in cash, an amount that corresponded to another €600 withdrawal made at an ATM near the shopping centre shortly before the time shown on the receipt.

Safe hidden in arrested woman's home

Following the arrest, officers conducted a search of the woman's residence. Inside they found a hidden safe containing €2,590 in cash, which was seized along with the €400 she was carrying at the time of arrest.

Once police procedures were concluded, the detainee was remanded to the custody of the on-duty investigating judge in Alicante.
