Guardia Civil operation shuts down drug trafficking network

The Guardia Civil has dismantled a criminal group dedicated to trafficking cocaine and cannabis in Mieres (Asturias) and in municipalities of León, according to a statement from the Benemérita. Operation 'Butzi' concluded a week ago with seven detainees, two of whom have been held in provisional custody.

According to reports from elcomercio.es, the criminals concealed the narcotics in chocolate wrappers to evade controls. The Organised Crime and Drug Enforcement Team (EDOA) of the León Comandancia began the investigation in February 2026 after detecting that a property in Villarodrigo de las Regueras was operating as a distribution point. The constant daily flow of customers indicated a high sales volume.

Members of the organisation also carried out direct deliveries in vehicles belonging to the gang, taking measures to avoid detection. On 2 October, three simultaneous searches were executed in Mieres and in municipalities of León, in which units from the Reserve and Security Group (GRS) 6 of León, the Public Safety Unit and canine units with drug-detecting dogs participated.

Officers seized three kilogrammes of cocaine, 18 kilogrammes of cannabis, over 15,000 euros in cash, two firearms and seven vehicles, several of them high-end models. Among those detained were five men and two women, including the main ringleaders of the gang.

The District Court Preliminary Investigation Section Number 1 of León issued a ruling on Sunday 4 October imposing provisional custody for the two leaders of the organisation. The remaining detainees were released on bail, subject to various judicial measures. The investigation remains open, so further arrests in the coming days cannot be ruled out.
