A man was detained in the early hours of Saturday in the Algorta neighbourhood, in Getxo, after chasing several people with a running chainsaw. According to tribunapalencia.com, the incident occurred around 5:00 am, following an argument that quickly escalated into a situation of serious danger.
Local police had to intervene rapidly in what Getxo Town Council described as an episode of high-risk violence. When officers arrived at the scene, the chainsaw had already stopped running.
However, the confrontation had not ended. Several of the people being chased threw themselves at the attacker and a struggle ensued. During that fight, the detainee suffered a wound consistent with the use of a sharp weapon. Officers subsequently found a knife in the vicinity, although they have not yet been able to determine who used it or the exact moment the injury occurred.
The toll from the incident was at least three injured. Two of the victims sustained minor injuries and were treated by health services at the scene. The man who had wielded the chainsaw, with more serious wounds, was taken to Hospital Universitario Cruces under police custody, remaining in detention.
The arrested man has a police record and a history of reoffending, according to information provided by Getxo Town Council.
The investigation remains open.
