Taxi driver shot dead in Azpeitia: suspect surrenders in Ondarroa

A 43-year-old man surrendered at 5.30 a.m. on Saturday at the Ertzaintza police station in Ondarroa (Bizkaia) as the alleged perpetrator of the murder of a young taxi driver in Azpeitia (Gipuzkoa), according to elpais.com. The Ertzaintza arrested him immediately on suspicion of homicide with a firearm.

The taxi driver, aged 31, was shot on Tuesday at approximately 20.15 on Artzubia Avenue in Azpeitia. According to eyewitnesses, the attacker first rammed the victim's taxi with his car and fired at him several times with a short-barrelled firearm. The young man died at the scene. The assailant, who has a record for drug dealing, then fled in his vehicle.

The Ertzaintza immediately deployed a search operation. That same Tuesday, at 23.25, officers located the car used by the suspect in another area of Azpeitia's town centre. Both this vehicle and the victim's taxi were taken to Scientific Police facilities for examination, as specified on Saturday by the Basque Department of Security.

The Territorial Criminal Investigation Service of Gipuzkoa (SICTG) took over the investigation. Over the following days, officers conducted raids and searches at various locations in Azpeitia and nearby towns: a fish market in the Landeta district, a premises on Pablo VI Street and a dwelling allegedly linked to the suspect, among others. None of these inquiries led to his whereabouts.

Finally, the suspect himself brought the search to an end by voluntarily presenting himself at a police station. The detainee has three prior arrests for offences against public health. Following the appropriate procedures, he will be brought before the courts.
