Suspected gunman in fatal shooting in Azpeitia surrenders to Ertzaintza
The alleged perpetrator of the murder of a young taxi driver in Azpeitia (Guipúzcoa) surrendered at 5:30 a.m. this morning at the Ertzaintza police station in Ondarroa (Bizkaia), according to information from the Basque Government's Department of Security. Elperiodico.com reports that the man, aged 43, was detained as the suspected author of a murder committed with a firearm.
The victim, a taxi driver aged 31, was shot multiple times with a short-range firearm last Tuesday, at around 20:15 hours. Eyewitnesses reported that the attacker first struck the taxi with his vehicle and then opened fire. The taxi driver died at the scene as a result of the severity of his injuries.
After the attack, the suspect fled by car. The Ertzaintza immediately launched a search operation and located the vehicle used in another area of Azpeitia's town centre that same night. In the following days, raids and searches were carried out at different locations in the municipality and in nearby towns.
The detainee has accumulated three previous arrests for crimes against public health, and his record includes convictions for drug dealing. Once arrested, he was transferred to police facilities for the relevant proceedings before being brought before a judge.
