National Police detained a man in the early hours of last Thursday as the suspected author of four violent robberies against tourists at Playa de Palma during this summer, according to Google News ES — Crime. In several of the cases, bladed weapons or broken glass bottles were used.
The Criminal Investigation Group of the Playa de Palma District had been investigating a series of assaults for weeks that followed the same pattern: the attackers operated in the early hours of the morning and chose as victims people in vulnerable situations due to alcohol consumption. The detainee is believed to have been part of a group dedicated to these robberies.
The first of the thefts occurred at the end of June. Several individuals surprised tourists who were swimming on the beach in the early hours; one of them broke a glass bottle to threaten them and made off with a bumbag containing a high-end mobile telephone.
Days later, an individual threatened another group of tourists with a knife and stole a mobile telephone and cash from them.
In July, a third tourist was attacked by several individuals in the street. They held him down whilst wrenching a watch valued at 8,000 euros from him; the assault caused bruising and cuts to his neck and shoulders.
In a fourth incident, a man threatened a tourist with a broken bottle in broad daylight on a public street and forced him to hand over his wallet containing documents and money.
After numerous investigative steps, officers managed to identify the suspect. Having no known address, several search operations were activated until he was located and arrested at Playa de Palma in the early hours of Thursday.
