Arrested for impersonating employee and stealing copper in three Galician provinces
A man was detained by the Guardia Civil after removing electrical material, mainly copper, from supply warehouses in Santiago de Compostela, Lugo and A Coruña, according to elcorreogallego.es. The modus operandi consisted of presenting himself as a worker from different companies, removing the material and leaving without raising suspicion.
The investigated incidents date back to January and February of this year. The detainee had previous experience in the electrical sector, a circumstance that, according to the Guardia Civil's Santiago de Compostela Command, he exploited to impersonate an employee of several companies or a self-employed worker. To do this, he used data from third parties and allegedly falsified documentation.
Once the material was obtained, the copper and other products were sold in establishments dedicated to metal trading, with the objective of obtaining economic benefit, according to the investigation.
The Guardia Civil attributes to the investigated individual seven fraud offences—two of them attempted—, three crimes of usurpation of civil status and five counts of falsification of commercial documents. The economic damage caused to the affected companies amounts to approximately 7,400 euros.
In the framework of the investigation, officers managed to locate 100 kilogrammes of braided copper on a reel that had already been sold to waste treatment companies. The material was recovered and subsequently handed over to its legitimate owner.
