Operation against cannabis resin trafficking in Asturias
According to lne.es, two men were arrested in the area of Fuente de las Palomas, in the Oviedo neighbourhood of Teatinos, after being caught with a van containing 30 kilos of cannabis resin. Both have been remanded in custody pending court appearance. The investigation, named "Operation Slow", was conducted jointly by the Drugs and Organised Crime Unit (UDyCO) of the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade of Asturias and the Drug Trafficking Groups of the local police stations in Gijón and Avilés from the beginning of 2026.
The investigation began following information about the possible involvement of a man resident in Oviedo in the distribution of significant quantities of cannabis resin in the Principality. Surveillance during the investigation allowed officers to detect movements and contacts consistent with this criminal activity. On Friday, after finishing his working day in Gijón, one of the suspects travelled to Oviedo, where he made several brief contacts and waited on a bench in the Teatinos neighbourhood. Minutes later, another man picked him up in a van.
National Police officers stopped the vehicle in a suitable location. The driver attempted to escape in reverse, dragging a police officer several metres, who finally managed to remove the ignition key and immobilise the van. His companion attempted to flee on foot towards the Los Prados shopping centre, being intercepted by other officers with the collaboration of security guards from the establishment.
In a search of the vehicle, police found two cardboard boxes containing cannabis resin blocks with a total weight of 30 kilograms. The two detainees were presented on Sunday to the Court of First Instance in Oviedo, Investigation Section acting as duty judge, which ordered their remand in custody at the Asturias Penitentiary Centre in Villabona.
