Double killing in Tauste: eldest daughter and her partner remanded in custody without bail for killing their parents

Carlota and her partner remanded in custody for the murder of the Tauste couple

Carlota, 40, and eldest daughter of the couple murdered in Tauste (Zaragoza), remains in provisional detention at Zuera prison alongside her partner, Luis Carlos, after the Ejea de los Caballeros Court ordered their imprisonment without bail last Thursday. Both were arrested on Monday for the alleged murder of their parents, Javier Sánchez and Ester Latorre, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday to Sunday. According to ABC.

Neither of the two wished to make a statement to police following their arrest, nor to the judge at the hearing held on Thursday. Carlota's involvement was, from the outset, the principal line of investigation for officers.

No signs of forced entry

Initial inspections at the family home revealed that the door had not been forced, which directed the investigation towards the immediate circle of the victims. The double homicide occurred a few hours after the couple returned from dinner with friends. Moreover, security cameras in the municipality and at the bus station place the two detainees near that stop both before and after the crime, although the investigation to establish all the details remains open.

Carlota's profile

Carlota resided in Zaragoza, just over half an hour from her parents' home in Tauste, a town of some 7,000 inhabitants. She began studies in Medicine at the University of Zaragoza, which she never completed. Her activity on social media is sparse and is limited mainly to her involvement with animal protection associations and the search for adoptive homes for dogs and cats.

According to the Heraldo de Aragón, the relationship with her parents was not straightforward and arguments were frequent. The pregnancy resulting from her relationship with Luis Carlos—a partner with whom she had been for barely a few months—would have intensified that family tension. Hours after the double homicide, Carlota attended Miguel Servet Maternity and Children's Hospital in Zaragoza with bruises and due to her pregnant state. Carlota is also associated with mental health problems, according to the same newspaper.

Her younger sister, who lived in Dublin, travelled to Spain immediately upon learning of her parents' death.

Luis Carlos, pending administrative regularisation

Luis Carlos has been in Spain for less than two years. Of Colombian origin, he applied for the regularisation of his administrative status under the measure approved by the Government, although at the time of the crime he had not received a decision on the matter.

Crowded farewell in Tauste

On Monday last, more than 1,500 people gathered in Tauste to bid farewell to Javier Sánchez and Ester Latorre. The tributes continue in the municipality, which remains in a state of shock. The UAGA, an agricultural organisation of which Sánchez was general secretary, has underlined the commitment of both to the labour rights of agricultural workers, as well as their personal worth. The death of the couple shook not only Tauste, but the whole of the Aragonese farming community.
