Repeated arrests for violent robberies

According to elcorreo.com, Basque police arrested two men several times in a single week as suspected perpetrators of violent robberies committed using the snatch-theft method in Barakaldo. The first arrest took place on Wednesday morning, when officers from the Municipal Police were alerted that two men had committed two robberies, one of them targeting an elderly person. After being arrested, they were released following their appearance before a judge.

On Friday, at around 8:00 hours, new witnesses informed the Local Police that two men had committed another robbery using the same technique in the Lurkizaga area. Upon arrival, officers arrested one of those involved, who was being held by a citizen. The police confirmed that he was one of the men arrested the previous day. Thanks to descriptions provided by witnesses, the Local Police also located and identified the second suspected perpetrator in the surrounding area.

Both were released again following their appearance before a judge. However, once on the street, the two men allegedly committed another violent robbery in the vicinity of the courthouse. On this occasion, it was the Ertzaintza who intervened. The incident occurred at 19:20 hours, when a call was received reporting that a 79-year-old woman had been robbed in the Rontegi district.

Third arrest and detention order

Upon the arrival of the Ertzaintza, officers observed a 23-year-old man of Maghrebi origin who was being held by two other citizens. According to witnesses, these individuals had pursued and caught up with the suspect after he had accosted the victim and snatched a chain with a pendant from her, throwing her to the ground. The detainee, with two previous arrests, was identified and taken into police custody. On Saturday morning, the judge ordered his imprisonment.

Ángel Madrazo, councillor for the Barakaldo Citizens' Security area, expressed concern about the recurrence of the incidents. "We are especially concerned that, after two arrests in just a few days for incidents of similar characteristics, another violent robbery has occurred," he said. Madrazo stressed that the Local Police would continue working to prevent this type of crime and that coordination with the Ertzaintza would be maintained to ensure a swift and effective response to any criminal act.
