Arrests for homicide during burglary

According to ondacero.es, the National Police have detained two minors, aged 17 and 16, as suspected perpetrators in the death of an 83-year-old woman. The body was found on Tuesday in a residence on Vitoria Street, in the Gamonal neighbourhood of Burgos, gagged and bound.

An autopsy revealed that the woman died from respiratory failure. As she was immobilised and gagged, she was unable to access the oxygen apparatus she used daily. Her body showed no other signs of violence.

The minors were arrested on Friday night. After giving statements during the early hours, they were placed at the disposal of the Burgos On-Call Prosecutor's Office, which will decide on their admission to a detention facility for minors as a precautionary measure.

The police investigation indicated that the death occurred during a burglary. The residence was ransacked, with several rooms showing the typical disorder of an assault aimed at jewellery or money. Analysis of security camera footage from the building entrance allowed officers to identify the suspects.

The discovery was made by the victim's caregiver after six o'clock in the evening. The woman had been left alone after her son departed following a meal with her.

The Scientific Police collected DNA samples that will be compared with those of the detainees. Officers managed to recover several stolen gold jewellery items. The investigation remains open with further arrests not being ruled out.
