The Civil Guard has arrested a bank branch worker in Gandia accused of withdrawing €25,000 from the account of one of his customers, an elderly woman living alone, according to levante-emv.com citing an official statement from the Guardia Civil. The arrested man is a 29-year-old Spanish male accused of a continuing fraud offence.
The investigation was opened on 2 March following a complaint filed at official offices. The victim stated that between 16 January and 6 June of this year there had been successive withdrawals of money from her bank account using a card in her name, accumulating a total of €25,000.
The woman noted that the same employee had always attended to her during all her visits to the branch. She also stated that this worker asked her at one point to change the PIN for access to the banking application in front of him, with the pretext of verifying that the new code worked from his mobile phone. Upon returning to her home and attempting to access the application, the customer discovered that the PIN was incorrect.
After gathering information from the banking institution, officers determined that the withdrawals had been made at a cashpoint in Gandia. Viewing the images from security cameras made it possible to identify the person who made the withdrawals, who turned out to be the same employee with whom the complainant had always dealt.
According to the Civil Guard, the detainee, in his capacity as a bank worker and with access to customer data, would have requested the victim's card without authorisation—either in physical or virtual format through the application—and had not cancelled it when the customer requested that he do so. He also had the PIN necessary to operate with it.
The investigators emphasised that the suspect deliberately chose this victim because of her vulnerability: she is an elderly woman, a foreigner, who has resided alone in Spain since the death of her husband and has no family in the country.
The investigation was carried out by officers from the Investigation Area of the Oliva Main Office. The proceedings have been handed over to Court of First Instance number 3 in Gandia.
