According to primicia.com.ve, Spanish security agencies arrested a former official of the Venezuelan embassy in Spain after finding 50 kilograms of cocaine in his luggage at Adolfo Suárez-Barajas airport in Madrid. The arrest took place on 8 September, although it was not made public until several days later.
The man, who according to newspaper El Mundo was actually a former diplomat, presented himself as an active official in order to evade security checks. Authorities had him under surveillance after detecting suspicious behaviour on previous trips.
Following his arrest, the former official was placed at the disposal of Spanish justice. Investigators are working to identify his accomplices, establish the drug trafficking route, and determine the suppliers involved. The investigators' main hypothesis is that this was not his first drugs shipment into the country.
As part of the investigation, Spanish justice called several officials from the Venezuelan diplomatic delegation in Madrid to testify. In their statements, the diplomats clarified that the detainee had not been part of the embassy's staff for two years, despite continuing to identify himself as such.
It emerged unofficially that the arrested man had allegedly held the position of consul, although this information has not been officially confirmed to date.
The case is being handled with maximum secrecy by Spanish authorities, so available information remains limited.
