Arrest of four suspects in homicide case

According to aquienlasierra.es, the Civil Guard has arrested four people for the murder of Elia Cobián, aged 80, owner of the historic Almacenes Cobián at Plaza de Pontejos in Madrid. The arrests took place on Thursday 20 October, more than five months after the crime occurred on 6 May at her home in La Navata, Galapagar.

Two of those detained were captured in Galapagar, one in Madrid and another in Villajoyosa (Alicante). The Civil Guard has identified the alleged perpetrators of the crime. Investigators also carried out three house searches in Galapagar as part of the operations.

Circumstances of the crime

Elia Cobián was found dead in the early hours of 6 May at her house on Calle Mandril. The elderly woman was discovered gagged, bound and with multiple traumatic injuries after being found by estate employees who noticed a broken window. A family lawyer confirmed the discovery.

Investigators determined that the victim was assaulted, gagged, bound and attacked, succumbing to the serious injuries inflicted. Initial theories pointed to an attempted robbery.

Investigation and follow-up

The Organic Unit of Judicial Police of the Civil Guard of Madrid carried out a police reconstruction on 29 September to establish escape times and routes. Analysis indicated that those involved would have used a path parallel to the Guadarrama river towards the town centre of Galapagar, avoiding regular routes to avoid detection.

In September, the Civil Guard requested public assistance after months without progress. Investigators succeeded in identifying escape routes and possible hiding areas. The detainees will appear before the judicial authorities in the coming hours. Proceedings remain confidential whilst investigations continue.

Elia Cobián had lived in the La Navata area for years and was retired.
