A man confessed to the crime at Álvaro Cunqueiro hospital in Vigo after allegedly slitting the throat of his 81-year-old mother. The Guardia Civil confirmed the facts upon attending the family home.

Arrest in Ponteareas following the homicide of an 81-year-old woman
A man in his sixties, identified as Joaquín P.C., was arrested on Sunday as the suspected author of the homicide of his mother, María Livia Conde Souto, 81, according to elperiodico.com. The incident occurred at midday in a flat located at number 8B on Rúa dos Carballos, a central street in Ponteareas, Pontevedra, very close to the courts.
The victim was apparently killed by throat laceration with a sharp weapon. The wound was located on the head area, according to officers from the Guardia Civil who confirmed this upon entering the home at around 14:30. The removal of the body took place at approximately 17:30, with the presence of the judicial commission and the forensic doctor. The judicial duty that Sunday corresponded to Court of First Instance number 2 of Ponteareas.
Confession at Vigo hospital
Following the crime, the suspected perpetrator did not remain in the home. According to various sources consulted by elperiodico.com, the man allegedly attempted to harm himself, and some sources suggest he tried to throw himself from a bridge or another elevated area of Ponteareas. He was transferred to the Psychiatry Unit of Álvaro Cunqueiro Hospital in Vigo, where he confessed to the facts. Medical staff raised a police alert, which enabled the Guardia Civil to travel to the family home and verify that the confession was true.
The detainee remained at the Vigo hospital facility in the early afternoon awaiting transfer to Guardia Civil premises, where he will remain until being brought before a judge.
Electrician who cared for his mother
According to the sources consulted, the suspected aggressor, an electrician by profession, was responsible for caring for his mother, who suffered from various ailments and mobility problems. He apparently took turns in this duty with another family member. Although they had lived in Ponteareas for approximately one year, the family is originally from Covelo. The house move reportedly took place due to the absence of a lift in the previous building, which was necessary given the octogenarian's physical limitations.
The man apparently has psychiatric problems. Several neighbours in the same building stated, after the body was removed, that the family situation had been tense for some time. "It was coming," they said. According to their account, mother and son frequently found themselves in conflictual situations, and on more than one occasion they had heard the woman shout that her son wanted to "kill" her. "Neither she nor he were well," they stated regarding the environment prior to the incident.
Guardia Civil deployment
The investigation was taken on by the Guardia Civil, which mobilised both Judicial Police officers and forensic officers to gather evidence in the home. They were accompanied by the judicial commission and the forensic doctor. Among those who attended the scene was another of the deceased woman's sons.
Minute of silence called by the municipality
The local government of Ponteareas called on citizens to observe a minute of silence on Monday at 12:00 hours in front of the town hall. "We convey our condolences and solidarity to the family, as well as our rejection of any form of violence," the municipality stated in its communiqué.
