Arrested at hospital after confessing to mother's death in Ponteareas
According to farodevigo.es, Joaquín P.C., in his 60s, was arrested on Sunday as the suspected perpetrator of the death of his mother, María Livia Conde Souto, 81, in a flat located on rúa dos Carballos, in the centre of Ponteareas (Pontevedra), very close to the courts. The victim presented a bladed weapon wound to the head area and is believed to have had her throat cut at midday.
After the crime, the suspected assailant allegedly attempted to harm himself. According to some sources, he tried to throw himself from a bridge or another elevated area of Ponteareas. He was taken to the Psychiatry Unit of the Álvaro Cunqueiro hospital in Vigo, where he confessed to the facts. Medical staff then alerted the police.
With this information, the Guardia Civil attended around 14.30 hours at entrance 8B of rúa dos Carballos and confirmed that the detainee's account was true: they found the woman dead inside the flat. The body was removed at around 17.30 hours, with the presence of the judicial commission and the forensic doctor. The duty court that Sunday was Court number 2 of the Civil and Instruction Section of Ponteareas.
The suspected murderer, an electrician by profession, was responsible for caring for his mother—who suffered from ailments and mobility problems—taking turns with another family member. Although both lived in Ponteareas, the family originated from Covelo. Neighbours from the same building indicated that mother and son had been living at that address for approximately a year, having moved from another property that lacked a lift.
Those same neighbours stated that it "was bound to happen", and recounted that they frequently heard problems from the flat and that on more than one occasion they had heard the woman shouting that her son wanted to "kill" her. "Neither she nor he were well", they said regarding the situation prior to the incident. The suspected assailant, according to sources consulted by farodevigo.es, has psychiatric problems.
Officers from the Judicial Police and the Scientific Police of the Guardia Civil were deployed at the flat to gather evidence. One of the other children of the victim also attended the scene. The detainee remained on Sunday afternoon in the Álvaro Cunqueiro hospital pending transfer to Guardia Civil facilities, where he will remain until being brought before a judge.
The local government of Ponteareas called on citizens to observe a minute's silence on Monday at 12.00 hours in front of the town hall. "We extend our condolences and solidarity to the family, as well as our repudiation of any form of violence," they stated from the council.
