Arrested in Amurrio following fatal shooting in Barakaldo

A 48-year-old man, identified as Jonathan V.P., was remanded in provisional custody on Saturday by order of the duty judge at Barakaldo Court of First Instance, according to Google News ES — Crime (es). He has been charged with homicide after firing a shotgun at another man in the Biscay town, causing his death. The detained man exercised his right not to declare before the judge.

The victim, Óscar F.S., and the alleged attacker, both of Biscay origin, had agreed to meet on Thursday afternoon to talk calmly, according to investigations. The meeting took place at approximately 20:30 hours at the end of Óscar's working day at the ITP Aero plant in Barakaldo, in the vicinity of Lasesarre football ground, on Manolo Travieso Street.

It was at that location where Jonathan V.P. fired the shotgun on up to three occasions. Only one of the projectiles struck the victim in the stomach and caused injuries of extreme severity from which he did not recover.

Investigators suggest the motive for the crime was jealousy: Jonathan V.P. did not accept that his ex-partner maintained a romantic relationship with the victim and, according to case sources, he "made their lives impossible". Before the shots were fired, the suspect even called his ex-girlfriend to say goodbye and tell her that he had a weapon, which caused concern that he might also attempt to take his own life.

After the shooting, the alleged perpetrator fled the scene. The regional police arrested him shortly afterwards in Amurrio, a municipality in Álava. The shotgun allegedly used in the homicide was found in the rear of his vehicle. The case will continue to be examined by a court in Barakaldo.
