A 39-year-old man was arrested on Saturday afternoon at a hospitality establishment in the Abaro neighbourhood of Portugalete after agents of the Ertzaintza personally confirmed that he was selling hashish to one of his customers. According to deia.eus, the arrest took place at around 20:20 hours.
The establishment had been under police surveillance for some time due to its suspected involvement in drug trafficking. A plainclothes patrol observed several customers entering the bar and leaving shortly afterwards, which reinforced the agents' suspicions. When they confirmed that one of those customers had just purchased hashish, the officers entered the premises.
Upon noticing the police presence, the bar manager threw a precision scales to the ground. The agents searched the establishment and found, hidden behind the coffee machine, two blocks of hashish, as well as cling film and a knife with residue of the substance.
The bar owner was detained as the alleged perpetrator of a drug trafficking offence and transferred to Ertzaintza facilities for the corresponding proceedings, subsequently being placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities. The operation was coordinated by the Basque Department of Security.
