The eviction of a dwelling in the Sagrada Familia neighbourhood of A Coruña, reported by residents as a point of drug distribution, ended last night with a fire that required the intervention of the municipal Fire Service, according to Google News ES — Crime.
The National Police had previously proceeded to seal off the flat due to its poor sanitary conditions, after a group of residents from the area gathered outside the building with saucepans, firecrackers and whistles. The protest, organised independently of neighbourhood associations, denounced the constant stream of people and the consumption and sale of drugs inside and around the dwelling. Amid whistles and jeers, officers removed the two occupants of the flat.
Once the fire was declared, firefighters proceeded to extinguish it with water and removed the glass from doors and windows that posed a danger. Additionally, they boarded up two openings on the front façade and three on the rear façade. The building's residents had to confine themselves to their homes, although no evacuations were recorded as a result of the fire. The 091 subsequently sealed off the flat, both at the doors and windows, "due to its unhygienic state".
This is not the first time the building has generated conflict in the neighbourhood. In April 2024, residents had already gathered outside the same dwelling, occupied by two men who had lived in the neighbourhood "for many years". The protesters complained that they were attracting numerous people who ended up consuming drugs "daily" in the streets of the area, in front of children and elderly people, and committing thefts and other criminal acts. "We call the National Police forty times a day if necessary. It doesn't matter what time of day it is because there is always a presence at the sales queue," residents said at that time.
