An instruction court in Lleida ordered provisional liberty with charges for the 19-year-old youth arrested for opening fire with an air rifle against a shop on Girona Street, injuring two men, according to elperiodico.com citing police sources.
The detainee, identified and arrested Thursday morning, had fired approximately ten shots into the shop the night of the previous Sunday. The charges brought against him include assault, public disorder, property damage, threats and attacks on the exercise of fundamental rights and public freedoms.
The incident is framed within a series of confrontations between shopkeepers of Pakistani and Indian origin and a group of young people—mostly minors, of Maghrebi and Spanish origin—triggered by several robberies at those businesses.
On Sunday afternoon, a citizen alerted a public order team deployed in Parc sobre les Vies that a young man was broadcasting live on social media encouraging people to attack Pakistani citizens and the Mossos d'Esquadra. Officers watched the broadcast and recognised the user as someone already identified in an incident the previous week.
Near midnight that same day, a group of young people confronted, threatened and hurled racist proclamations at an Indian citizen, who sought refuge in a supermarket belonging to acquaintances on Girona Street. The attackers then caused damage to the premises and one of them fired with the pellet gun, injuring two men inside.
When patrols arrived at the location, the assailants fled on foot or by scooter. Officers managed to detain on the spot a 15-year-old minor, accused of public disorder. The next day, the victims filed a complaint accompanied by an injury report and a screenshot of the person responsible for the shots, which was found to match the user of the broadcast.
Investigators established the identity of the suspect—the 19-year-old youth—and proceeded with his arrest Thursday morning. The Police of the Generalitat points out that he would be one of the leaders of the group that confronted the shopkeepers of Pakistani and Indian origin.
Since the altercations intensified last weekend, the Mossos d'Esquadra have made around a dozen arrests among members of both sides, all of them released after giving statements to police or in the courts. The investigation remains open to identify and detain the remaining participants in the disturbances.
