Assault in cell

Violeta B. G., a 21-year-old Spanish citizen resident in Las Letras, was reported for assaulting two national police officers during her detention at the Centro district police station, according to ABC. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on 11 September.

The detention began when a patrol car was spat upon by the woman in the street. She was arrested and taken to the Leganitos police station, where she resisted being placed in the cell with such violence that it required the intervention of five officers.

Resistance in the cell

Once recorded, around 1:15 in the morning, she was taken to cell number 11. According to the police report, the detainee "displayed an uncooperative attitude", forcing additional force to be deployed to proceed safely. During the transfer from the search area to her cell, up to four officers were involved, each holding one of her limbs.

As she was being transported, she kicked one of the police officers in the testicles. A fifth officer was required to place her in the cell, where attacks continued. When two officers attempted to restrain her, one of them released the upper part of her body and she attempted to strike the other, without success. Seconds later, when another officer released the detainee's legs, he received a direct kick to the face.

Injuries and impact on service

Both police officers filed formal complaints. One suffered an abrasion on the little finger of his right hand and scrotal swelling from the kick to the genital area; the other sustained bruising around an eye and on the cheek. No injuries were serious.

The incident interrupted routine public prevention service when both officers were meant to be reinforcing the deployment due to the high influx of people in the district during the Madrid Grand Prix Formula 1 race, which took place that weekend.

Context of assaults on officers

According to police sources, cases of attacks on uniformed officers are increasing ever more, particularly among the young population. Investigation Court number 35 in Madrid took up the case for the offences of assault on an authority officer.

The Centro district accounts for the highest volume of work of all Spanish police stations due to the movement of tourists and residents in areas such as Puerta del Sol, Gran Vía, Chueca, Malasaña, La Latina, Huertas and Lavapiés. The latter stands out moreover for incidents of drug trafficking and continuous conflicts.
