The Jucil association of the Guardia Civil has demanded that the Government restore the Andalusian Drug Trafficking Coordination Body (OCON-SUR), according to huelvainformacion.es. The request comes after ten members of a criminal organisation were arrested on Saturday as alleged perpetrators of an armed attack with firearms against a patrol boat of the Provincial Maritime Service in Huelva, carried out in the early hours of 17 to 18 August.
"The Government cannot continue postponing a necessary decision whilst civil guards and their families bear the consequences of providing services in one of the areas with the greatest criminal pressure in Spain," Jucil states in a statement.
For the association, the incident confirms that "drug trafficking has increased its operational capacity and level of violence". In their view, the dismantling of the specialised unit "weakened the operational capacity of the Guardia Civil" at a time when drug trafficking networks were extending their activities from the Campo de Gibraltar into the provinces of Huelva, Cádiz, Málaga, Seville and the rest of Spanish territory.
Jucil warns that "the restoration of OCON-SUR cannot be delayed any further or replaced by temporary measures or announcements lacking operational substance". The association considers a permanent and specialised unit essential, equipped with sufficient resources to confront criminal networks that, as it emphasises, have vessels, weapons, technology, logistical infrastructure and extensive financial resources.
In addition to the reactivation of OCON-SUR, Jucil also demands that Huelva be declared, without further delay, a Zone of Special Singularity. This designation should translate, according to the association, into financial and professional incentives, specific points for assignment of posts, reconciliation measures, support for families, workforce stability and urgent coverage of existing vacancies.
