The detainee had entered the autonomous city irregularly during the surge on 30 July. Before the incident with the military, the man had a confrontation with several people whom he threatened with a stick, a scene witnessed by a warehouse worker nearby, who alerted the security forces.

The military patrol was the first to arrive at the scene, aboard an armoured vehicle as part of their surveillance and control duties. The incident occurred around two o'clock in the afternoon. Following the alert, the uniformed officers combed the area and located the individual, who matched the description provided by the witness in both clothing and physical build.

One of the patrol members ordered him to halt, but the detainee fled through the port. A member of the Regular Group pursued him to an alleyway, where more soldiers from the group joined in. The patrol managed to control the situation, subdue the subject and disarm him. According to El Faro de Ceuta's identification, the soldiers involved are Bilal Amin, Ahmed Hossain and David Toro, who were acting under the orders of Sergeant Kevin Zapata.
