Migration crisis in Ceuta: prosecution counts sexual assault victims

According to Google News PL, during the migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, the prosecution confirmed 23 victims of sexual assault – including nine minors aged between 14 and 17 years old. Local television station Faro TV described this number as a record in the city's history over a single month.

The figures were published on Monday in an official statement by law enforcement. Investigators succeeded in identifying eight men suspected of carrying out the attacks: four Moroccan citizens, three Spanish nationals, and one Belgian citizen.

The crisis began on 30 July, when approximately 80,000 migrants entered the territory of Ceuta – a Spanish enclave in North Africa bordering Morocco directly – in a mass incursion. The mass influx was made possible by the inaction of Moroccan border services.

The response by Spanish authorities led to a partial containment of the situation. Within days, more than 70,000 people were returned to Morocco or formally expelled from Spain. According to the latest figures, around five thousand foreign nationals may still be present in the enclave. Over the past three weeks, services deported more than 200 people from Ceuta.

The crisis also resulted in fatalities. According to estimates by the Spanish non-governmental organisation Caminando Fronteras, at least 145 migrants died during the mass crossing in late July.
