According to Google News ES — Crime, OCON-SUR was an elite unit that operated in Andalusia for four years, leaving a record of 12,000 arrests and more than 1,100 tonnes of drugs seized before its dissolution in September 2022.
The unit was created in 2018 with the objective of curbing the escalation of violence linked to drug trafficking in the region. It had some 150 agents available 24 hours a day and concentrated its action on the most active criminal organisations in the Strait of Gibraltar.
Among its most notable achievements is the capture of Los Castaña, the clan considered the most powerful in the history of drug trafficking in Andalusia. The unit also dismantled several criminal organisations characterised by their violence, which, according to its leaders, contributed to restoring the principle of authority on the coasts of the south.
The Interior Ministry decided on its dismantling in September 2022, citing internal reorganisation of command structures. The authorities recalled at that time that the creation of OCON-SUR had a temporary character, designed specifically to respond to specific circumstances of insecurity in the area.
Its disappearance generated debate about the continuity of efforts against drug trafficking in one of the regions with the greatest pressure of drug trafficking towards Europe.
