Officers from the Spanish National Police arrested a man in Valencia who Czech authorities were seeking in connection with large-scale fraud. In an official statement, Spanish police described the detainee as "one of the most wanted fugitives by justice in the Czech Republic". The arrest took place as part of an international operation aimed at improving information exchange between police forces in European countries.
Czech police presidium spokesman Ondřej Moravčík confirmed to the ČTK agency that Czech police participated in the operation. "I can confirm that our information led to the detention of the wanted man," he stated. He did not reveal the detainee's identity and added that police would provide further details next week.
According to the Spanish police statement, the man was involved in fraud related to oil supplies from Venezuela. The customers, however, never received the Venezuelan crude. "The affected companies suffered damages exceeding two million euros," the Spanish police statement noted.
The arrest was made possible through the international operation Trakathon, conducted in early June, in which around one hundred investigators exchanged information about several dozen of the most wanted fugitives. Thanks to this initiative, participating police forces obtained data for additional investigations relating to 56 individuals.
