Detention of Rafael Amargo in Madrid following domestic disturbance

According to elpais.com, flamenco dancer Rafael Amargo, 51, was detained on Saturday by the National Police along with his partner Luciana Bongianino, 38, following a fight at their home in the Madrid district of Carabanchel. A third man, aged 38, broke into the property in the early hours after breaking a window, starting an altercation that alerted neighbours.

Officers arrived at around 6.30am. During the police intervention, Amargo assaulted one of the officers, who proceeded to detain him for assault on authority and injuries caused to the intruder. Bongianino was arrested for assault charges. The third person involved was taken into custody for breaking and entering and threats against property.

The incident comes years after Madrid's Provincial Court acquitted Amargo in April 2024 of drug trafficking and membership in a criminal organisation charges that the prosecution had pursued with a request for nine years in prison. Amargo had been detained in 2020 in Operation Codax, accused of trafficking drugs from his home. During the trial, he acknowledged drug use but denied criminal activity, defending himself with statements such as "I am a flag and bastion of Spain" and asserting that his home remained open to people of all kinds without prejudice.
