Murder suspect of taxi driver in Azpeitia surrenders with firearm in Ondarroa

Alleged taxi driver killer arrested in Ondarroa
The suspected perpetrator of the murder of a young taxi driver in Azpeitia surrendered on Saturday at 5.30am at the Ertzaintza police station in Ondarroa carrying a short-barrelled firearm, according to diariovasco.com. The detainee, a 43-year-old man with a criminal record, presented himself of his own accord at the Ertzaintza station in the Biscay coastal town.
The victim is Alex Aizpuru, a 31-year-old taxi driver from Azpeitia who died last Tuesday after receiving at least five gunshots on Artzubia avenue, next to a roundabout situated between the bullring and Garmendipe football pitch.
The pistol, key to the investigation
Basque regional police will centre their inquiries on determining whether the short-barrelled firearm surrendered by the suspect is the same weapon used in the shooting. The Ertzaintza ballistics department must confirm that the five cartridge cases found at the crime scene on Tuesday match this pistol.
Reconstruction of events
The incident occurred at around 8.00pm on Tuesday. According to investigations, a grey Volkswagen vehicle struck the taxi driver from behind. When Aizpuru got out of the vehicle, the suspect fired at least five shots that caused his death. One of the shots is reported to have hit the victim in the head.
The detainee has a criminal record and, according to diariovasco.com, spent seven years in prison for drug-related offences. Authorities are also investigating whether there are other people threatened in connection with this case.
