Suspected author of fatal shooting in Azpeitia arrested in Ondarroa
A 43-year-old man surrendered at 5:30 in the early hours of Saturday at the Ertzain-Etxea police station in Ondarroa and was arrested as the suspected perpetrator of the homicide committed last Tuesday in Azpeitia, according to naiz.eus. The victim, a 31-year-old man, died after receiving several gunshots on Avenida Artzubia in the Gipuzkoa locality.
The events occurred around 20:15 hours on Tuesday, 1 September. A man fired several times with a short firearm against another on Avenida Artzubia in full view and fled the scene in a vehicle. The victim died at the scene as a result of the severity of his injuries.
The Ertzaintza immediately activated an operation to locate the perpetrator. At 23:25 hours that same Tuesday, officers found the suspect's vehicle in another area of Azpeitia's town centre. Both that vehicle and the victim's vehicle were transferred to the Ertzaintza's Scientific Police facilities for visual inspection.
The Gipuzkoa Territorial Criminal Investigation Service (SICTG) took over the investigation to identify and arrest those responsible. Over several days, officers carried out raids and searches at various locations in Azpeitia and other nearby localities. Finally, the suspect chose to surrender voluntarily in Ondarroa in the early hours of Saturday, after which he was formally arrested as the suspected perpetrator of a homicide offence involving a firearm.
The detainee has three previous arrests for offences against public health. He was transferred to police facilities for the relevant proceedings before being placed at the disposal of the judiciary.
Following news of the arrest, the Azpeitia municipal government announced that it is placing its municipal resources at the disposal of all citizens who need support, including free psychological assistance. The council made the offer through a statement published on its website.
The mayor, Nagore Alkorta, also reiterated the appeal for prudence issued on Wednesday and called for respect towards the family of the deceased and all those involved. "As it has done from the beginning, the municipal government wants to call for prudence, above all out of respect for the family of the deceased and for all those involved," said Alkorta.
The first magistrate also indicated that the council has placed "all its resources at the disposal of the family so that they can count on the support and assistance they need," and that the Municipal Police is collaborating with the institutions carrying out the investigation. "These past few days have been turbulent and difficult in Azpeitia. We hope that, from now on, tranquillity and normality will gradually return to our town," the mayor concluded.
