Alleged Azpeitia killer detained after surrendering in Ondarroa
A 43-year-old man, sought since last Tuesday as the alleged perpetrator of the homicide in Azpeitia, surrendered early this morning at the Ertzain-Etxea police station in Ondarroa. According to orain.eus, the detainee was carrying a firearm at the time of his surrender, although authorities have not yet confirmed whether it is the same weapon used in the crime.
The surrender took place at 5:30 a.m. on Friday. The Ertzaintza proceeded to detain him on suspicion of committing a homicide offence with a firearm and transferred him to police facilities to carry out the relevant proceedings, before placing him at the disposal of the courts.
The shooting on 1 September
The incident took place at around 20:15 on Tuesday, 1 September on Artzubia avenue in Azpeitia. The now-detained man fired several times with a short-barrelled firearm at another man and fled the scene in a vehicle. The victim, 31 years old, died at the scene as a result of the severity of his injuries.
Minutes later, the Ertzaintza activated a search operation. At around 23:25 that same evening, officers located the suspect's vehicle in another area of Azpeitia's town centre.
Days of searches and raids
Over the following days, the Ertzaintza carried out searches and raids at various locations in Azpeitia and in other nearby municipalities without managing to locate the suspect. The investigation remains open to determine the motive for the incident, which according to initial hypotheses "could have a sentimental nature".
The detainee has three previous arrests for offences against public health.
Response from Azpeitia town council
The mayor of Azpeitia, Nagore Alkorta, reacted to news of the detention with a call for caution. "The town council wishes to ask for caution, above all out of respect for the relatives of the deceased and for all the people involved," she stated.
Alkorta added: "We hope that, from now on, peace and normality will gradually return to our town".
