Taxi driver shot dead in Azpeitia after being struck by another vehicle

A taxi driver was shot dead on Tuesday in Azpeitia, a Gipuzkoan town with a population of just over 15,000, according to El Mundo citing the Basque Department of Security. The incident occurred around 20:15 hours on Avenida Artzubia, near Garmendipe football ground.

According to eyewitness testimony collected by local media outlet Azpeitia Guka, a vehicle struck the black taxi being driven by the victim. Immediately afterwards, the driver of the attacking car fired several shots at the taxi driver.

Emergency services arrived at the scene and attempted to resuscitate the man, who died at the scene. Several patrols from the Ertzaintza and Azpeitia Local Police also travelled to the area.

An acquaintance of the victim told EFE that he was a resident of Azpeitia aged between 30 and 40. Although he had recently been working as a taxi driver, the man had previously worked as a disc jockey and "would even go to perform in Ibiza". He was, according to the same testimony, a well-known person in the town.

Officers from Ertzaintza investigation units remained at the scene that night gathering evidence. The deceased's body was covered with a screen pending removal.

In a brief statement, the Ertzaintza confirmed it had opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the death and stated that at that time it was searching for the perpetrator of the shooting. The Regional Police established checkpoints at several locations in the Azpeitia area in an attempt to locate the vehicle in which the attacker fled.
