Shooting in operation against robber gang
According to The Olive Press, two plainclothes Civil Guard officers were wounded Thursday evening following a shootout with a gang of lorry cargo robbers in the Can Paralleda neighbourhood of Terrassa, Barcelona. The most seriously injured officer was struck by four shotgun rounds; his colleague received a single impact. Both were taken to nearby hospitals in the area and there is no risk of death.
The incident began when the officers pursued the suspects from the Barcelona port toll booth on the AP-7 motorway to Can Paralleda. They attempted to stop and search the vehicle on Calle Europa, but the gang attempted to ram them with the car and then fled on foot.
According to video recorded by a local resident, the officers located the group in a car park adjacent to several residential buildings. While aiming at one of the suspects hidden behind a car, an accomplice appeared running from a corner and opened fire on the officers. The footage shows the attacker wielding a firearm in one hand and a shotgun in the other. Another gang member struck one of the wounded officers on the ground with a stick before the gang fled.
Both officers returned fire. The two are stationed at the Civil Guard command post of Sant Andreu de la Barca.
Three of the four suspects were arrested by the Mossos d'Esquadra. The fourth suspect, allegedly the father of the three detainees according to EFE agency, remains at large. A firearm related to the shots was recovered.
The gang is suspected of operating as "teloneros", a term used for criminals who steal lorry cargo when drivers stop at service areas or on roadways. Authorities are maintaining an active operation in the area.
