Military personnel repel armed assault with gunfire near barracks in Fuerteventura

Three men aged 29, 47 and 49 have been arrested in Puerto del Rosario on suspicion of armed robbery, attempted homicide, assault on an authority figure and drug trafficking, according to rtvc.es. The incident dates back to the night of 31 August, when a group of four people violently attacked a couple near a military barracks in the capital of Fuerteventura.

The police operation began following an alert of a brawl on the public road in which several individuals were carrying weapons. According to the investigation, one of the alleged perpetrators held the woman by the neck whilst threatening her with a large knife positioned at her abdomen, taking her personal belongings. At the same time, several attackers pursued the man accompanying her, also armed with knives.

Both victims sought shelter at the barracks and called for help from the military personnel on duty. One of the attackers continued the pursuit and attacked a soldier who attempted to intercept him to protect the victim. The soldier sustained injuries to both arms and a hand. Faced with the risk to those present, members of the guard detail fired warning shots and managed to finally disarm and subdue the alleged attacker.

Minutes later, several units of the National Police arrived at the scene, secured the perimeter and initially detained two of those involved. The investigation was taken over by officers from the Judicial Police unit at the Puerto del Rosario Police Station, with collaboration from the Citizen Security and Scientific Police units.

The investigation allowed a third man, aged 47, to be identified. He was located and arrested hours later as a suspected co-perpetrator of the armed robbery. Upon his admission to police premises, officers found among his belongings a bag containing approximately five grammes of cocaine and around three grammes of heroin, the latter distributed in nine individual doses. This evidence led to him additionally being charged with a suspected public health offence.

The investigation also made it possible to identify a fourth person linked to the assault: a 25-year-old woman, a suspected participant in the armed robbery who remained at large at the conclusion of the investigation, with an active police warrant for her arrest.

Based on statements from victims and witnesses, as well as seized evidence, the investigation suggests the origin of the incident could lie in a settling of scores or violent collection of debts linked to the local drug trafficking environment.

The three arrested men were brought before the competent judicial authority in Puerto del Rosario, which ordered their remand in custody.
