Knife assault near barracks in Puerto del Rosario results in three arrests
Spain's National Police has arrested three men aged 29, 47 and 49 in Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura) as suspected perpetrators of a violent assault on a couple. According to ABC, the incident occurred during the night of 31 August in the vicinity of a military barracks in the Majorcan capital.
A group of four people attacked the couple violently. One of the assailants held the woman by the neck and threatened her with a large knife positioned at her abdomen level whilst taking her personal belongings. At the same time, several of the attackers chased the man accompanying her, also armed with bladed weapons.
Both victims sought refuge near the barracks and called for help from the military personnel on duty. One of the assailants continued the pursuit with the knife in hand and attacked a soldier who attempted to intervene to protect the victim. The soldier was injured in both arms and in one hand. Facing immediate danger, members of the guard detail fired warning shots, eventually managing to disarm and subdue the suspected assailant.
Shortly afterwards, several units of the National Police secured the area and proceeded with the initial arrest of two of those involved.
The investigation was taken over by officers from the Criminal Investigation division of Puerto del Rosario Police Station, with the collaboration of Citizen Security and Scientific Police. The enquiries made it possible to reconstruct what had happened and identify the other people allegedly linked to the assault. Hours later, a third man, aged 47, was located and arrested as a suspected accomplice in the violent robbery.
At the time of his arrival at police headquarters, officers found among his belongings a bag containing approximately five grammes of cocaine and around three grammes of heroin, the latter distributed in nine individual doses. This circumstance, together with the remaining evidence gathered, led to him also being attributed a suspected offence against public health.
The investigation also identified a fourth participant: a woman aged 25 identified as a suspected accomplice in the violent robbery. At the close of proceedings, she remained at large, with an active police search underway for her arrest.
Based on the statements of victims and witnesses, as well as the items seized, investigators place the origin of the incident in a possible settling of scores or violent debt collection linked to the local drug-trafficking environment.
The three arrested men are attributed, according to their degree of participation, suspected offences of violent robbery and intimidation, attempted homicide, assault on a public official and drug trafficking. Once proceedings were concluded, the three detainees were brought before the judicial authority in Puerto del Rosario, which ordered their remand in custody.
