A serious traffic accident occurred on Monday evening on Terminaalinkatu in Lappeenranta, in which a 16-year-old moped rider died. He was part of a larger group of friends, some of whom were travelling on bicycles.
The sequence of events began when a car approaching from behind began to overtake the moped by moving into the opposite lane. The moped rider did not notice this and turned left, which resulted in the car hitting him. The collision did not occur at an intersection, but the moped rider was intending to cross a median strip onto a bicycle lane.
The 18-year-old driver of the vehicle is suspected of driving significantly faster than the permitted speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour in the area. There were two people in the car, who survived without injuries.
The young driver has admitted guilt regarding serious endangerment of traffic safety and causing death by negligence. The investigation continues, after which the case will proceed to the prosecutor's office.
