32-year-old mother convicted of child abandonment in Tampere
A thirty-year-old woman from Tampere received a fine sentence after leaving three underage children unattended and going to a licensed restaurant in November last year.
The mother had started drinking alcohol already at home on a weekday evening. Once her 3-, 5- and 11-year-old children had fallen asleep, the woman left the flat to continue her evening outside.
A person who was later with the woman reported the situation to police. Officers found the mother on the street in a state of severe intoxication. Authorities visited the home to check the situation together with the woman.
The children were still asleep and had not suffered physical harm. However, because the mother was unable to care for her dependants, the social services and crisis hotline took the three children into care.
The prosecution considered that the woman had left her children in a helpless state and endangered their lives or health. The woman admitted the charge was correct and accepted compensation claims from her children.
Pirkanmaa District Court imposed 30 daily fines on the 32-year-old, totalling 180 euros. In addition, she must pay each child 650 euros for emotional distress.
