Investigation into Raasepori shooting case completed three years later

The West Uusimaa police has concluded an investigation into a fatal shooting that occurred in Snappertuna, Raasepori in August 2023. According to police documents obtained by Is.fi, a 75-year-old man shot his 79-year-old wife and subsequently killed himself.

On Monday, 7 August 2023 at 7:47 am, the emergency services received a call in which the man reported his actions and stated his intention to harm himself as well. Multiple police units and ambulances were immediately dispatched to the scene. Authorities rushed to the house with such haste that the fence around the red house's courtyard broke and wooden pieces scattered around.

Police attempted to reach the man by phone several times – without success. At around 9:15 am, both the wife and the man were pronounced dead. The wife was found shot in the house's living room; the man was found dead outside the house.

Licensed pistol used as murder weapon

According to the investigation, the man used a licensed pistol as the murder weapon. Police suspected the act had been premeditated.

"He said something in the emergency call that pointed to premeditation," the lead investigator in the case told Is.fi previously.

Police documents reveal that the man also possessed a shotgun and a hunting rifle, which in part explained the extensive police operation. Shell casings from firearms were found inside and around the house.

Motive remained unclear

The motive for the case remained unexplained. At the beginning of the investigation, police stated that the motive for the homicide was "entirely open", and it is not mentioned in the investigation's final report either. As the suspected man died, the case did not proceed to prosecutors.

Neighbours shocked

The detached house in Snappertuna was in the 79-year-old wife's name. The couple lived in the house alone. According to neighbours, they appeared completely ordinary and were well-liked.

"Police were running around the yard, and the road was closed. The wife called the emergency services, but they said they could not tell us anything. They told us to stay inside," one of the neighbours described the events to Is.fi.

Snappertuna is part of the City of Raasepori, approximately 90 kilometres from Helsinki.
