Human trafficking investigator suspected of rape in police premises

According to Yle.fi, the preliminary investigation into a police officer who worked in the human trafficking investigation unit at Helsinki Police Headquarters has been completed. The man is suspected of rape, sexual assault, abuse of official position and human trafficking.

The alleged acts are believed to have occurred between March 2024 and July 2025. There is one complainant.

According to the investigating officer, regional prosecutor Mikko Teppola, the alleged rape and sexual assault are believed to have occurred once in March 2024 in the police cells at Helsinki Police Headquarters, while the complainant was under arrest and detained.

The police officer was the complainant's principal interrogator in the human trafficking investigation at the same time. According to Teppola, he continued contact with the woman after her release until July 2025, mainly in his spare time.

The man admits to continuing contact on improper grounds and to committing abuse of office. He denies the sexual offence and human trafficking charges.

The criminal allegations first came to public attention in October of last year. According to Yle's information, investigators from the Central Criminal Police arrested the man from Helsinki Police Headquarters in August 2025 during his working day. Home searches were carried out at both the police station and the suspect's residence at the same time. The man was detained for approximately two days.

The police department announced last autumn that a senior crime constable who worked in the human trafficking unit had been dismissed in September 2025. The department considered him so unsuitable to continue in his position that his official duties could no longer be continued.

The matter is now proceeding to the prosecutor for charging decisions.
