Last summer in the capital's Alppihauju district, police were forced to use a firearm against 26-year-old Samuel Lindblom. The young man had been moving through the stairwell of a residential building on Kinaporinkatu with a bladed weapon. When officials arrived at the scene, he climbed into a space near the roof.
According to the authorities, the man did not comply with given orders and behaved in a manner that required use of force. He advanced towards officials with a knife in hand. A stun gun was first attempted, but it did not stop him. The firearm was then discharged several times, and the man died immediately. The sequence of events was later classified as self-defence.
The mother of the deceased young man has publicly raised questions about whether the situation could have been resolved differently. She wonders why the man was not isolated and why riot shields were not utilised. The family received official confirmation of their son's identity only three days later, despite having already received condolences earlier.
Before his death, Lindblom worked in the natural products sector and was planning to begin studies at university. Those close to him describe him as someone interested in wellbeing and nutrition.
