A man convicted of violent acts that took place in Suonenjoki received a sentence of four years in prison at the Court of Appeal, compared with the previous sentence of eight years.
Court of Appeal Reduces Violent Crime Sentence by More Than Half
The Eastern Finland Court of Appeal has decided on a significantly shorter sentence than the district court had imposed. A middle-aged man who had previously been sentenced to more than eight years in prison has now received a sentence of four years and two months.
The case involves 18 separate offences. The main location of the incidents was Suonenjoki, and the acts took place between spring 2024 and the beginning of 2025. The focus of the man's activity was his child's stepmother.
In November 2024, the man deliberately drove towards the stepmother's car in another municipality. He then damaged the woman's vehicle tyre with a sharp weapon. The woman managed to escape the situation.
Later, the man sent death threats to his victim and threatened to set fire to her home.
The situation escalated when authorities arrived at the man's home in Suonenjoki to arrest him. He then fired an air gun at police and claimed there were explosives in the flat. The arrest was eventually successful with the assistance of a police dog.
According to the Court of Appeal, the act constituted an attempted murder, not an attempted homicide as the district court had found. This legal interpretation had a decisive impact on the length of the sentence. Both the prosecutor and the injured party opposed the reduction. The convicted man himself denied being guilty of anything other than endangering traffic safety and illegal threats.
Compensation amounts also decreased at the Court of Appeal in almost all respects. The option to appeal to the Supreme Court remains.
