Teacher remanded in custody on suspicion of extensive sexual offences in scouting
Central Finland police have concluded a preliminary investigation in which a 43-year-old man from Jyväskylä is suspected of multiple sexual offences against children, according to Yle Uutiset. The investigation has examined acts targeting a total of 20 different complainants.
The suspect is a teacher by profession, but police emphasise that the suspected offences are not connected to his work or workplace. The man has served as an instructor in scouting activities and in activities run by the Salvation Army.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the acts are alleged to have occurred in connection with scouting activities with one exception, primarily in Jyväskylä. The acts are suspected to have taken place between October 2020 and February 2026.
Police have investigated the cases under the offence categories of serious child sexual abuse, child sexual abuse, coercion into a sexual act, serious rape of a child, and sexual assault of a child.
The man was remanded in custody in March and remains in custody. The case has been referred for prosecution review, and the deadline for deciding whether to press charges is 29 October.
