Wave of violent offences on Haukilahti beach – police investigate eight cases
Yle News reported that Espoo police are investigating at least eight violent offences that took place in the Haukilahti beach area between Friday and Saturday, 28–29 August. According to police, none of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries. The perpetrators and victims are mostly aged 15–18.
On the evening of Friday, 28 August, two girls assaulted a 16-year-old girl by kicking and pulling her hair. According to police, the perpetrators were previously known to the victim, and the motives for the act are being investigated. On the same evening, a group struck and kicked a 16-year-old boy – the identities of those suspected are still being established.
The situation escalated so severely on Friday that police had to evacuate the beach area entirely to prevent further crimes.
On Saturday evening, a group of approximately 20 people struck and kicked a boy of about 15 years old. The suspects are unknown to police. On the same evening, two young men struck an 18-year-old man several times and stole a chain from him. Both suspects were arrested, and according to police, the motive for the act may be related to previous incidents involving the parties.
Criminal Commissioner Tanja Taulo considers the number of cases significant and urges the guardians of young people to be vigilant. According to Taulo, guardians should discuss with the young person their evening plans, their company and curfew times, and ask how the evening went. Young people should also be reminded to follow the authorities' instructions and to leave the area if the situation appears unsafe.
