Online child sexual abuse rising – police statistics show sharp increase
Finnish police warn that sexual abuse of children via the internet has become more common and increasingly affects younger children.
The majority of cases of child sexual abuse reported to authorities this year occurred in online environments or originated there. Cases in which a young person was promised payment for sexual acts have also largely begun online.
Child sexual abuse has increased overall. In 2023, police received reports of approximately 800 cases of sexual contact involving minors. Last year, the figure was already over 1,500.
