A person severely injured in an armed act of violence that occurred in the Peitsar neighbourhood of Mikkeli over the weekend is in a serious but stable condition, police report.
Crime Commissioner Tarja Lehtonen, who is leading the investigation, says that both the injured party and the arrested suspect are from Mikkeli. The case is being investigated as attempted murder.
Authorities are not disclosing the age of the perpetrator and victim or other details of the situation.
Police conducted an arrest operation during the weekend in the Rokkala residential area approximately three kilometres from the incident location. According to Lehtonen, this was directly related to the investigation. At least two people were detained from the area, who have since been questioned.
The suspected man is being sought for remand in custody at the South Savo District Court on Tuesday.
The incident has sparked lively discussion on internet forums. These have featured personal assessments of the situation, mentioned names, and shared photographs. On Monday, Lehtonen had to correct false information circulating in the media about the victim's death.
The authorities are monitoring online discussions, although some of them contain inaccurate information. Lehtonen reminds commenters that they may unknowingly break the law if they share photographs or private information about individuals.
"The line for defamation can be crossed. Social media platforms are not the place to share information that violates people's private lives," Lehtonen emphasises.
The act of violence occurred in a residential area in Peitsar, near a car park.
