A victim seriously injured in a weekend armed confrontation in the Peitsar district of Mikkeli is in a serious condition, police said on Tuesday morning.
Detective Superintendent Tarja Lehtonen, who is leading the investigation, confirms that both the injured person and the suspected perpetrator are from Mikkeli. The incident is being investigated as an attempted murder.
During the weekend, police made an arrest in the Rokkala residential area, which is located a few kilometres from the crime scene. According to Lehtonen, this arrest is directly related to the investigation. At least two people were taken into custody from the area and have been questioned.
On Tuesday, the South Savo district court will hear a request to remand in custody a 21-year-old man suspected of the offence. He has a criminal record dating back to his youth: he has previously been convicted of theft and narcotics offences.
The incident has sparked extensive discussion on internet discussion forums, where rumours, names and photographs have circulated. Lehtonen had to refute claims that appeared in public on Monday regarding the victim's death. The authorities are monitoring the online discussions, although they are not treating them as facts.
"Many people may find it difficult to contact the authorities with their observations, so anonymous posting seems easier. Of course we cannot take the discussions at face value, but we can verify matters based on them," Lehtonen states.
Police remind the public that distributing personal information or photographs online may cross the line of defamation. The crime scene was located in the middle of a residential area, near a car park.
