Naantali cottage killing: nature photographer woman shot dead, man also deceased
Ilta-Sanomat reported that police suspect a 54-year-old man of murdering his 57-year-old wife with a firearm at the couple's holiday home in Naantali last May. Following this, the man is suspected of shooting himself.
Police found both bodies on Wednesday, 27 May, after receiving a call to the summer cottage. Both individuals' deaths have been recorded in the population register as occurring on 25 May – an estimated two days before they were discovered. The couple's permanent residence was located in Turku.
Investigation leader, Detective Inspector Jari Klaus, stated in a press release that on the basis of technical investigation conducted at the scene, police have reason to suspect that the man murdered his wife first and then himself. The firearm used by the man was licensed, but he had reported it as missing years earlier.
On the couple's social media accounts, a long shared history is visible. They appeared to have been married for at least over ten years and posted numerous photos together. The woman who was killed was an active nature photographer with a substantial number of followers on social media. The last sunset photograph was posted on her account just one day before the estimated date of death. The man, for his part, engaged in fishing and mentioned in one newspaper interview that he enjoyed nature and its peace.
In recent years, the man had experienced financial difficulties: over the past ten years, he has been a respondent in dozens of debt cases at the district court in his hometown. Approximately ten years ago, he was charged with a drug offence, but had no other criminal history.
Police did not publicly report the case until Monday. The force justified its silence on the grounds of the ongoing investigation and privacy protection. The preliminary investigation has now been completed and the investigation concluded. The case will not proceed to court because the man suspected of the offence is deceased.
