A pedestrian died in the Kuusankoski area of Kouvola early Saturday morning when a van ran them over in the town centre. The driver left the scene, but police apprehended him shortly after the incident occurred.

An official breath test suggests that the driver was under the influence of alcohol, which impaired their driving ability. For this reason, he is suspected of aggravated drink-driving.

Investigating officer Kati Rokka from the South-Eastern Finland Police states that whilst conditions were dim, this does not principally explain what occurred.

The man's actions are also being investigated for aggravated culpable homicide, aggravated endangerment of traffic safety, and hit-and-run.
